20 X 3 Brushing Technique for Dog Coat Maintenance and Matt Prevention

20x3

Many Pet Owners are Frustrated by having to have their dogs hair clipped short by their Professional Pet Stylist.

The Pet Stylist puts the humane treatment of your pet first, and if the coat cannot be saved without undue discomfort and stress to your pet, clipping can be the only choice.  A fresh start. An opportunity to acclimate your pet to regular brushing and combing at home in between visits to the salon.

With this is mind, we introduce you to the #20X3brushing technique.

It’s pretty simple. Most dogs can be maintained with 20 minutes of (proper technique) brushing and combing, 3X/week.  That’s it. All the fancy grooming tools mean nothing if pet owner’s don’t appropriately use them on a regular basis in between clips.

  • Brush backwards, from tail to head, and upwards on the legs.
  • Follow with a metal comb.
  • If you cannot get a comb from the skin to the tip of the hair shaft, your dog’s coat condition is compromised.  Seek a professional pet stylist for advice!
  • Always get your #20X3brushing done in the same place in your home. Dogs LOVE routine!
  • Follow positive reinforcement techniques. Reward for cooperation.
  • Most Professional Pet Stylists will offer complimentary brushing and combing classes.  Become an expert on coat maintenance, and get your information from a professional!
  • Exercise CAUTION with dematting tools. Get training on their use. They are DANGEROUS.
  • Please do NOT cut matts out of your dog’s coat with scissors.  You may cut the skin underneath.

So Remember, Brushing 20X3 (20 minutes, 3X/week) may be the solution you need to maintain your pet’s coat in between grooming appointments.

If you want long beautiful coat on your pet, a Breed Trim or sculpted scissor cut, remember it is up to YOU at home to bring us a happy, healthy matt free dog who loves to be brushed.  Let the professionals do what they do best, Pet Styling not shaving 🙂

On a final note, your #20X3brushing can be a bonding experience between you and your dog.  You train them to sit, stay, walk on leash, why not train them to accept brushing and combing and make it part of your regular routine?

Remember the #20X3brushing technique  and give it a try!

You and your pet will be happier, and so will your professional pet stylist!

Jeanette

Grooming Dogs while in Heat

Here is a (graphic clinical language warning) great read about recognizing the signs that your dog is in heat.

http://dogs.lovetoknow.com/wiki/Dog_Heat_Symptoms

If your female dog is not spayed please familiarize yourself with this information.

Our policy at A Royal Touch Pooch Parlour is that we do not groom female dogs while in heat, for the following reasons:

  • The female dogs are uncomfortable being handled while in heat
  • The female dogs may ‘present’ while being groomed, making them difficult to handle safely
  • The male dogs in the salon become agitated and difficult to handle safely
  • It is messy and may involve multiple baths (and therefore be more expensive of a service)

If you have booked an appointment and notice your dog goes into heat, please reschedule your appointment.  Your staff at A Royal Touch Pooch Parlour appreciate your understanding in this matter and emphasize that all dogs are deserving of a calm, comfortable salon environment. We are happy to have your cooperation as we strive to keep our salon as stress-free as possible for everyone.

Love and Grooming,

Jeanette

Selecting a Grooming Salon? Please read.

frenchie

With the weather being so lovely, we are getting a lot of calls from potential new clients. (Thank you!!)

We understand and respect that you have many salons to choose from and are grateful for your consideration when selecting grooming services.

If you are looking for a Professional Pet Stylist, I would like to offer you a link to our our Salon Policies page, http://aroyaltouch.com/salon-policies/

This page outlines our policies and best practices at A Royal Touch. This will help answer many of your questions when we are unavailable by telephone, or if you are researching Pet Grooming Services outside of regular business hours.

Not every salon runs the same way, and some salon policies may or may not jive with your Pet Lifestyle Philosophies at home.  We strive for quality, humane grooming, ethical handling and a positive environment for your pet. We do not provide rush services, and we do not provide dematting services. We groom at the pace that your dog is comfortable at. Our grooming service fees are mid to high range, giving us the ability to groom for love, not for volume.  We use top quality, biodegradable custom shampoos and conditioners with no extra charge for deep conditioning or specialty products.

At A Royal Touch we respect the diverse nature of all fur families, and understand not every salon is a good fit for every pooch. I encourage all pet owners to do their homework, and ask lots of questions when choosing a Pet Stylist. What works for some pet owners at a particular salon may not work with others. Finding a salon with publicly stated salon policies can help you make an informed choice on what works best for your furpersons and your family.

We state our policies so you know exactly what we offer and what we don’t offer.  If our services and policies do not jive with your expectations, then I respectfully thank you for your time and consideration, and wish you and your pet the very best!
